“It Helps a Lot”

Christobal moved away from his home in Texas to live near one of his four sisters. They were close growing up, and he didn’t have anywhere else to go.

His sister was his rock for years, working hard to support them both. Sadly, when she passed away, Christobal felt lost.

“She’s the one that helped me,” he says. “She passed away, and I’m still here.”

As he coped with the grief, the expenses began to pile. Now, Christobal is one of many seniors in our 23-county service area who rely on SNAP benefits to supplement his groceries each week. But with recent cuts to government funding and continued high prices just about everywhere, it’s even harder for Christobal to access the healthy foods he needs.

“I got to pay for my phone, my rent, food,” he says. “It’s hard to buy food. It’s so expensive.”

Without support, Christobal realized he needed help. That’s when he turned to Westwood Terrace, a partner of River Bend Food Bank, to fill the gaps left by his limited income.

“I’m happy about [Westwood Terrace] bringing food here because people use it,” he says. “It helps a lot.”

To friends like you who make this community support possible, Christobal shares a simple message of gratitude: “Thank you!”

Yes! Thank you for helping seniors across eastern Iowa and western Illinois get the food they need to thrive.
