Cultivating a Stronger Tomorrow

Posted June 8, 2026

John Maxwell and his wife, Joan, are fifth-generation farmers and owners of Cinnamon Ridge Farms, a century farm rooted in Iowa agriculture for generations. Together, they have built an award-winning operation alongside their family, continuing a legacy of excellence in dairy farming and cheesemaking. As dedicated partners of River Bend Food Bank, the Maxwell family has generously contributed dairy products from their farm for years, helping nourish neighbors across the region.

Farming is more than just a family legacy spanning back to 1855. For John, it is a calling to care for his community. With a background steeped in agriculture and community service, John views his partnership with River Bend Food Bank as a vital way to provide nutritious options to neighbors — especially during difficult times.

“We as a society depend on each other and help each other,” he says. “If my brother or sister is in need, what harm is it to help? Why can’t we lift them up a little bit?”

John puts this belief into action by providing thousands of pounds of high-quality cheese curds and shredded cheddar to neighbors facing hunger through River Bend Food Bank.

“In my core it is about feeding people, caring for people,” he says.

“That’s what’s so great about food banks like River Bend,” he goes on to explain. “People can access affordable produce and affordable dairy and affordable things that are actually good for them.”

John started Cinnamon Ridge Farms in 1988 with just 180 acres. Today, he farms about 4,000 acres; raises cattle, chickens, and pigs; and processes dairy products — all while being an active member of his church and his local North Scott Rotary Club. We’re grateful he also carves time out to partner with River Bend Food Bank to build a stronger community.

We’re thankful for the support John gives, and for his drive to nourish our neighbors. Partnerships like this help us feed people today and end hunger tomorrow.
