Sharing Food and Fueling Wellness

Nutritious food is critical to our health and well-being, but especially for older neighbors who may have special dietary needs or restrictions. As you know, those foods can be expensive, especially for people who are living on a fixed or limited income.

Rita understands this all too well. She has chronic heart disease, so it’s important for her to eat heart-healthy foods. But her budget doesn’t have room for the rising cost of nutritious food, and she gets very little in assistance.

“I think $24 is pretty hard to stretch,” she says of the monthly SNAP benefits she receives.

That’s where the Rock Island County Senior Center comes into the picture. The fresh produce she is given — like avocados and bananas — is invaluable, not only to help Rita eat healthy, but also to stretch her SNAP benefits through the month.

“I’m deeply grateful for the food and the fact that it helps everyone no matter what, and I praise God for it,” Rita says. “I ask the Lord to bless everyone who helps to donate and spread the food to everybody that needs it.”

Thanks to caring donors like you, Rita and her neighbors in Rock Island have support and somewhere to turn when they need help accessing nutritious food. They know they aren’t alone.

Thank you for providing healthy food for older neighbors! People like Rita are so grateful for your generosity.
