WHAT IS A FOOD BANK?
River Bend Food Bank is a non-profit organization that collects and distributes food to hunger relief charities. Food comes from various sources in the food industry, like grocery stores and wholesalers, that have thousands of pounds of food to give away – food that would otherwise be thrown away. The Food Bank also receives food and monetary donations from businesses through funds and food drives, the annual Student Hunger Drive, and from generous individuals who believe – like we do – that no one should go hungry.
Food is brought to our 60,000 square foot warehouse where it’s sorted, labeled, inventoried, and packed for redistribution. Nearly 2,000 volunteers make this work possible every year!
We warehouse the food (over 1 million pounds in any given week) and redistribute it to over 300 partner agencies (school pantries, churches, community action organizations) across 23 counties in eastern Iowa and western Illinois.
Partners take shelf-stable foods, fresh produce, dairy products, and frozen proteins, along with miscellaneous items like pet foods, infant formula, and personal hygiene items to their pantries, where children and adults experiencing hunger have access to the food they need.
The graphic below shows how resources come into the Food Bank and go out as food to people experiencing hunger. As you can see, building a hunger-free community takes… a community!
To get involved with the crucial work of ending hunger, get involved today!
River Bend Food Bank relies on the generosity of its supporters to help fight hunger in eastern lowa and western Illinois. Each year, over 22 million meals are missed in our service area. Your financial support is essential to bridging the meal gap in our community.
Volunteers are crucial to the operation of River Bend Food Bank. Without volunteers, it would not be possible to collect, sort, and distribute all the food that comes through our warehouse every day. Together we're feeding people today and ending hunger tomorrow.
