Summer memories are some of my favorite memories.
There was nothing quite like being able to trade the long days of the school year for long days spent outside, riding bikes, and playing in the neighborhood. I loved the endless supply of Popsicles and the calls for supper that came from every mother on the block. The best part was that you could answer any of those calls and be assured that there would be a place at the table for you and hot food on your plate, even if it wasn’t at your own house. I think of these memories often as the weather turns warmer and we approach the end of the school year; and this year, I’m beginning to realize how those memories are still relevant to my work today.
While part of what I remember so fondly was related to the freedom I felt from the rigors of school, what impacted me most was the way we took care of each other, the way our block would come together to be sure all the kids were cared for all summer long. Today, neighborhoods rarely function like they used to, and in many cases, for good reason, but that doesn’t mean we can’t remember the powerful impact those mothers made when they opened up their table so that no kid would go hungry. At River Bend Food Bank, we are committed to doing the same.
Through our 400+ hunger-relief partners, we provide food to families all year long. Families that rely on school food programs during the school year can turn to community pantries during the summer months to help close the gap in their children’s nutritional needs, but this wouldn’t be possible without you.
Your donations are vital to our ability to do what we do, and this is just as true in the summer as it is all year long. Thank you for standing alongside us. Together, we can ensure there is enough food on as many tables as possible so that summer can be a season of hope and nourishment for everyone.
Warm wishes,
